From Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake, there are countless outdoor activities and lands that are awaiting your exploration. This 24-hour community values and embraces the many different topographies, allowing for a range of activities (Hiking in Tahoe National Forests, to four-wheeling the sand dunes on Sand Mountain). Its unique weather will even allow you to ski/snowboard, and swim all in the same day! Boating on Donner lake, fishing in Washoe Lake, and feeding the ducks at Virginia Lake are just some of the day to day discovering Northern Nevada has to offer.
Northern Nevada is incomparable, as it offers events that you can only find here. The Rib Cook Off, one of our community’s biggest attractions, brings in more than 500,000 people every Labor Day weekend. Going on in the same weekend there is the Burning Man Festival which is unlike any other. With one blink the Black Rock Desert is transformed into a working city of about 70,000 people! Don’t forget Northern Nevada is also in the Guinness Book of World Records for Basecamp, located on top of Whitney Peak looking down on the Reno Arch, which is the “World’s Tallest Climbing Wall” reaching 164 feet.

The Best in the West Rib Cook Off takes place each year in Downtown Sparks, on Labor Day weekend. The event has grown each year, and continually brings roughly 500,000 people to the Northern Nevada area. Vendors and participants travel from all over the country to participate and taste delicious ribs! Voting for your favorite vendor is half of the fun, seeing the same vendors and winners with their signature sauce, makes it fun to go back year after year. The most wanted title and top prize is “People’s Choice” and the award is $7,500.
July is ArTown in Northern Nevada! It is visible all throughout the community, in many different forms. From painted trash cans, to fire and belly dancing performers, ArtTown embraces all of its local artists and gives them a platform to showcase their unique and beautiful talents. Growing each year, ArtTown now has more than 500 events, and more than 100 local organizations and businesses participate. ArtTown stretches throughout the community, having displays from Pyramid Lake to Lake Tahoe.
Since 1986 Hot August Nights has paraded its way through Northern Nevada. From Virginia City to Virginia Street, participants are able to rev and roar their engines, showing off their classic hot rods. Though many prizes are available, the best one comes free in the form of an “ahhhhh” from a thrilled, full audience.
While exploring the breathtaking Lake Tahoe, you will find the attractions come in many forms; from an eccentric night life (infamous night clubs), to indescribable outdoor recreation (camping, skiing/snowboarding, paddle boarding) there is an activity for all ages and physical capabilities.
